Over the last week quite a bit of progress has been made towards getting my Gremlins battle-ready. I have made some initial strides towards getting the little green guys n gals painted up. All now have most of the main colours in place which leaves some highlighting, tidying and details to go. Should be done by the end of the weekend.
I have now got tickets for both Pubfaux in Woking and Deliverance in Cardiff to make my debut onto the tournament scene. I would be pleasantly surprised if I manage to extricate myself from the bottom tables but can’t see it happening for a few tourneys yet! To be honest though I’ve never really been too concerned with winning as long as the game is absorbing, narrative and enjoyable and Malifaux certainly seems to have these elements in spades…erm..Crows, Tomes, Masques and Rams.
Battlefoam bag and Rulebook
I have also bought a Battle-foam Malifaux bag and, finally the full M2e rule book. The bag, notwithstanding the slightly odd shape, is very good. Well put together, zips seem solid and the carrying strap nice and sturdy. Lots of pockets for cards and decks and three layers of foam for minis. More than enough space for a 100ss pool of models with space too for the large and small rulebooks to fit with ease. I do find the foam is a little scratchy on Battlefoam products and has a tendency to catch on delicate parts slightly more than the KR foam but the overall quality and functionality is faultless. And I have a suspicion that the more delicate components of the new Wyrd plastics won’t survive much beyond the first tournament anyway. In fact at Smogcon all the extra cables I had lovingly added to the rail Golem were snapped off by the time I collected my crew at the end of the painting competition!
Yesterday morning the ‘big’ rulebook finally (due to the reprint) arrived from those thoroughly wonderful people at Element Games. WOW, this is beautiful. Very well put together. All colour as is now the norm for rulebooks but Wyrd’s palette holds the book together perfectly from start to finish. As a complete noob to the game, the wealth of background material is fantastic and I now feel I understand a little more about the world of Malifaux and this just adds to my level of immersion into the game. Having all the stat cards plus a little background into each and every character in the wave 1 release is superb too. It will take me some time to read it all.
I also bought more than a few Ultra Pro Binders for all the arsenal cards I now have, one for each faction! Not that I need all of these but once you get locked into any serious collection the tendency is to push it as far as you can.
The #ToMB Gremlins
So back to the Gremlins. I now have the Born on the Bayou box and Gracie all but completed. With the dollars I saved from last month I will have a total of $34 to spend on Monday 17th. Looking through the Wyrd store with my limited experience I think the choices come down to; Lenny, Skeeters/giant mosquitoes and Young Lacroix. The latter i suspect are a no brainer due to their ability to add to Ophelia’s potential by adding upgrades to her and their ability, if I understand correctly, to use any of her upgrades. I suspect that Lenny is less useful to this crew than the Skeeters but as a painting project he will be more fun to paint so I think I will be getting him plus the Young Lacroix for month 2. It also means I can get both Skeeters for month three and paint them at the same time. Ssshh, yes of course I already have them! In fact I think I now own all of the Gremlin models, Pushing the collection to the limit once again.
I’m hoping to get a couple of games in on Vassal next week so with a bit of luck I will be able to bring you a battle report next week. I will also write up a painting guide to either the Bayou Gremlins, Lenny or the Young Lacroix and also a mini guide to painting Horses with Oil Paints.
That’s it for this time. As ever if you have any comments, suggestions or advice on playing a non-existent faction please leave a comment here or find me on twitter @wrkbnchwarriors
