Hi there all,
So we’re into the second month of ToMB and I get to buy some more models. My first batch of Gremlins are still at the same stage of painting as they were last week. Nearly there as you can see. Just details and a few layers of shading and highlighting to go.
Into The Bayou
I ventured out into the Bayou in search of some of the keenest Gremlin minds. Out here nothing but sticky mud and silence. Where there were birds no birds. Twisted agonized trees struggle for air and nourishment amid the choking undergrowth. Stuck in the cracked silt the shapes of dead and dying things, etching claws, fins and scales into the earth, cutting the sky into wings agitating the stillness. Focusing my attention ahead through the green brown decaying slick murk of the water I make out two shapes. A faint sound escapes the leaden gravity of the air and reaches desperately for my ears as if attempting to escape an unseen pursuer. It is ‘The Edit Song’ popularized on the chasing Bacon Podcast. The other figure now comes into focus. He appears to be tearing and clawing at a book. ripping and slashing at the pages while muttering a litany of hatred for the title “How to play Bushido”
Here then I have found the two gurus of all things Gremlin. Chris (lemonboyfaux) and Dom (@dumb_luck89 ) Both have given me some excellent advice on my first forays into Malifaux. I have taken all this sagely advice on-board, spent hours reading and re-reading the stat cards for my crew, played one Vassal game, arranged another and made my decision. This month I have the $25 plus my change from the first month. So I will be buying a pack of 3 Young La’Croix and Lenny to add to my crew. In fact I will only be using one of the Young La’Croix as a totem for Ophelia. so the other 2 will remain on the bench for now. They add a lot of versatility to Ophelia and can use her Upgrade cards and, if I understand correctly hand off weapons to her. Lenny, I realize, is probably not the best tactical option immediately but I love the model and price wise I was able to get him. Next month I will probably add the Skeeters that I suspect would be a better tactical option than Lenny, but I was $2 short!
Over the last week quite a bit of progress has been made towards getting my Gremlins battle-ready. I have made some initial strides towards getting the little green guys n gals painted up. All now have most of the main colours in place which leaves some highlighting, tidying and details to go. Should be done by the end of the weekend.
The Born on the Bayou box set plus Gracie. Nearing completion
I have now got tickets for both Pubfaux in Woking and Deliverance in Cardiff to make my debut onto the tournament scene. I would be pleasantly surprised if I manage to extricate myself from the bottom tables but can’t see it happening for a few tourneys yet! To be honest though I’ve never really been too concerned with winning as long as the game is absorbing, narrative and enjoyable and Malifaux certainly seems to have these elements in spades…erm..Crows, Tomes, Masques and Rams. This then is part Zero of my Tale of Malifaux Bloggers contribution. The aim of the project is to get as many Malifauxers?Malifauxists Malifauxuns? to chart their progress through planning, painting and gaming with a new crews. As a complete newcomer to the game (one intro game as yet) I will be learning the game as well as my new crew. A daunting prospect. I already have an Arcanist crew which has appeared in other blog posts here so I need to come up with a new one for ToMB. Although in the fulness of time I can quite easily see myself having almost the entire range of crews the choice of my ToMB crew was fairly easy. The Gremlins!
Why then have I chosen a faction which are reportedly not even real and for whom the majority of models have not yet been released? The answer is partly an aesthetic one, I love the existing models which are insanely full of character and the opportunity in the next few months to have new castings coming out which will undoubtedly be even better it feels like having a double crew! The other motive is the background. The Gremlins lie just outside the main storyline of Malifaux and drift in and out as their shenanigans and personal motives cross that of the main protagonists. Their Bayou/everglade home is a modellers dream (I have plans afoot for a Bayou Bendyboard) they’re small and green, they make their own whiskey and ride giant pigs, What’s not to like?
So, armed with my Virtual $80 it’s off to the Wyrd store… Continue Reading
